This isn’t a question that many homeowners are asking today but could be in the near future.

As you well know California is in the midst of a severe drought that seems to be getting worse by the day. For some residents in California, they literally have to walk a mile to get a sip of water!

It’s hard to believe that in 2015 we have people in the United States experiencing this type of hardship.

This current drought doesn’t recognize state borders and has rampaged through states as far north as Washington State and has reached the western edge of New Mexico.  The entire west in tinderbox right now.

With the utter lack of water in the western states, wildfires have been rampant this year as well. According to the National Interagency Fire Center,  7.2 million acres of land have been burned this year.

There is a total of 88 active large fires as we speak right now. Here is a quick breakdown of the states currently affected.

  • Idaho: 21
  • Washington State: 17
  • California: 16
  • Montana: 14
  • Oregon: 11

Heck, this fire season has been so bad, President Obama has declared a state of emergency for Washington State.

Also, for the first time in a decade, the U.S. military has deployed active-duty soldiers to help battle these wildfires.

The seriousness of the water situation across the west can not and should not be underestimated.

State Governments & Businesses React To The Drought

State governments across the west are developing numerous strategies to combat the drought, which ultimately could affect homeowners and businesses alike. Take a look at what our neighbors are doing.

While the drought isn’t as severe here in Arizona, our state government is being prudent with its drought planning.

Local governments, municipalities and utilities across Arizona are being urged to upgrade to more water-efficient technology.

According to research conducted by the water conservation group Western Resources Advocates, 500,000 acre-feet of water can be saved each year with smart meters.

This is enough to supply 1 million homes with water!  Did you know that Arizonans are ahead of the nation in installing water efficient faucets and showers?

Nearly 35% of Arizonans are using EPA-rated efficient bathroom faucets and 39.3 percent have the stingiest shower heads! Arizona is leading the way to a brighter future!
