Keeping The Shine One Cleaning At A Time!

Our homes are our sanctuaries. We yearn for our homes when we are away. We want to escape from them when we are bored.

We even spend most of our working lives paying off a mortgage to own it!  Our homes are central to our lives.

Every home is unique to the individual. We all have different tastes and styles that are special to us.

Some of us even invest in tile. Many homeowners install tile to enhance the look and feel of their home. Others buy tile to add value to their home.

Some like it for the low maintenance.  Whatever the reason, tile is a great choice for your home.

Take A Closer Look At Your Tile and Grout

Your tile floor takes a punishment over the years without much fanfare. The dogs, the kids, the birthday parties and the dirty work boots don’t affect tile the same way it does carpet. It is harder to notice tile wear if you don’t keep a sharp eye on it.

Even though it might not look like your tile and grout needs cleaning, when you take a closer look they are telling you a different story.

When you do take a closer look at your grout, you might notice a slight discoloring from hard water, minerals, grease, mold or mildew. Grout by nature is a porous substance that is prone to staining.

Grout comes in two basic styles, unsanded and sanded. The main difference between the two being unsanded grout is a pudding smooth blend of Portland cement and powdered pigments mixed with water. While sanded grout uses the same ingredients with sand added to the mix.

Did you know that the width of the joint between the tiles determines what grout is used in your home?

To avoid discoloring between regular cleanings here are a few cleaning tips to keep your grout looking great!

  • Use warm water, a stiff brush and some good ole’ fashioned elbow grease to eliminate stains.
  • For mild stains you can use a vinegar and water solution. Mix a bottle with half vinegar and half warm water. Spray and let stand for five minutes. Scrub with stiff brush.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide can also be use as an effective grout stain remover.

Taking Care Of Your Tile

You might also notice that over time the factory applied finishing on your tile becomes dull and worn. This leaves your tile looking unattractive and shabby.

That’s not the reason why you bought tile flooring right? You want it looking its best no matter what the season!

A little TLC in between regular tile cleanings can keep the beauty of your tile for years to come. Here are a few easy steps you can follow to ensure that your investment in your tile is protected.

  • Regularly sweep tile to avoid scratching caused by dirt.
  • Mop tile once a week.
  • Utilize floor mats- Mats traps unwanted corrosive contaminants such as dirt, sand, oil, asphalt from entering your home. This will slow your tile wear.
  • Protective Pads On Furniture- This will prevent your tile from being scratched when furniture is moved.
