Do you know the difference between a spot and a stain? Are you wondering if this is a trick question yet? Most people think that a spot and a stain are one in the same, so it is often used interchangeably. The truth is there is a distinct difference between the two!

So What Is The Difference?

The difference between a spot and a stain basically comes down to time and the level of penetration of the soil in question. A spot typically attaches itself to the outside of the carpet fiber and doesn’t have time to penetrate the carpet fiber if taken care of in an appropriate amount of time.

A stain, on the other hand, is a spot that has penetrated the carpet fiber causing a noticeable discoloration.

Treatment Options For Spots

Spots can occur on your carpet from any number of organic materials. These organic materials can be broken down into two categories, solvent soluble and water soluble. Once you figure out what type of spot you have, you can determine what type of cleaner to use.

Solvent soluble organic material tends to be greasy and oily in nature. This means that a solvent based spot remover is going to be more effective than a water based spot remover. A solvent soluble spot remover will lift the spot off your carpet without damaging it.

Water soluble organic material has a wide category. This includes items such as bodily fluids, blood, urine and food proteins.  The most common spot you are going to encounter in your home is going to be of the water soluble variety.

Treating this type of spot requires a detergent-based solvent in order to be effective in removing the spot from your carpet.

Fixing A Stain

In order to repair a stained carpet, it is going to require more than using solvents to lift the soil off the carpet fiber. A stain has had time to penetrate into the carpet fiber itself, causing discoloration of the carpet fiber from original manufacturer specification. A stain can come from items such as an ink pen, red wine, and coffee just to name a few.

Most of the time stain removal requires a professional carpet cleaning because household remedies and off the shelf spot removers simple can’t get down deep enough into your carpet. Professional carpet cleaning penetrates down deep into the carpet fibers and eliminates the stain all the way through the carpet fiber!
