I’m glad to see that you survived the holiday season with your carpet blemish free I hope! With the beginning of the New Year brings renewed optimism about the future and a critical eye towards the deeds and actions of the past year.

Do you have things that you want to accomplish this year that you didn’t last year? If you are like me I want to continue to learn so I can share more knowledge about trends, tips and best practices in the carpet cleaning industry with you.

In order to start this glorious new year off right, I want to share with you how you can protect your carpet with heavy foot traffic.

An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure

Prevention is the name of the game when it comes to protecting your carpet with heavy foot traffic. Preventing dirt and grime from making it onto your carpet in the first place is the best way to keep your carpet in one piece.

This can easily be achieved by simply taking off your shoes before you enter your home.

Business owners on the other hand obviously can’t ask their patrons to take off their shoes at the door.  Business owners and facility managers do have options that can protect their carpet and their pocketbook.

Did you know that for every pound of dirt that gets tracked into your business,  it costs roughly $500 to remove it!

The more dirt and grime that you prevent from entering your building the more money you save on cleaning expenses!

Floor Mats Are Your Friends

The unsung hero of carpet protection is the often forgotten about floor mat. The floor mat acts as the first line of defense against the outside world.

In a recent study conducted at the University of Arizona by Charles Gerba discovered that many different types of contaminants can live on the bottom of our shoes!

The study asked 10 people to wear new shoes and go about their daily lives. After two weeks the shoes were swabbed and analyzed. Here is what they found:

  • 421,000 units of bacteria were present on the bottom of the shoes
  • Coliform was detected on all of the shoes
  • Coli was found on ⅓ of the shoes
  • Sand, grease, oil, tar and dust were found on the shoes

As you can see our shoes can carry harmful pathogens without us even knowing about it! Can you imagine tracking E. coli onto your carpet where your children play?

If you place floor mats strategically throughout your home or your commercial facility, you can reduce the chance of contaminants reaching your carpet.

When you combine soil prevention with strategic floor mat placement you will be happy with the results.
